### James Potter
This confident (who certain people might call arrogant) [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) happened to be the father of the one and only [Harry Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter). A talented wizard, [James](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/james-potter) often used his abilities to cause all sorts of mischief – normally with right-hand man Sirius – whilst a student at Hogwarts. The pair of them have even been compared to fellow pranksters [Fred](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fred-weasley) and [George Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/george-weasley). He also happened to be a talented Quidditch player and was the [Seeker](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/seeker) on the Gryffindor team. Sometimes known by his [Marauder](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/marauders) moniker, Prongs, he and his fellow friends did channel some of their energy into accomplishing some pretty complex magic while at school. The [Marauder’s Map](/fact-file/objects/the-marauders-map) was the result of one such escapade. While the other Marauders might have thought he was the bee’s knees, fellow Gryffindor [Lily Evans](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lily-potter) was not so keen… at least until their seventh year at Hogwarts.

### Sirius Black
This young rebel loved to push boundaries and break the mould – starting with being sorted into Gryffindor when the rest of his [pure-blood fanatic family](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-black-family) belonged to [Slytherin](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/slytherin). He and James were the two founding members of the Marauders, having become firm friends while aboard the [Hogwarts Express](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hogwarts-express). [Sirius’](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sirius-black) impulsive streak did cause him some issues while at school and could tip over into unkindness – especially towards a certain long-haired Slytherin. However, fundamentally Padfoot (his Marauder name) was a good person who stood against Dark magic and was entrusted with the role of godfather to a young Harry Potter.

### Remus Lupin
The Marauder known as Moony might have been the best [Defence Against the Dark Arts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/defence-against-the-dark-arts) teacher that Harry ever had, but there was so much more to the talented [Remus Lupin](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/remus-lupin). Intelligent, kind and often an outsider, Lupin found his place amongst the Marauders. While this Gryffindor did have a *furry little problem* that needed to be kept under wraps, his friends embraced every part of Remus – something he rarely experienced. While he was often the conscience of the group, he did end up a [Prefect](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/prefect), he could have the odd moral wobble… especially when it involved turning a blind eye to the activities of the more *rambunctious* Marauders.

### Peter Pettigrew
The final member of the Marauders, [Peter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/peter-pettigrew) (also known as Wormtail), was the weak link in the group. He might have been sorted into Gryffindor, but courage was not something he was known for. Pettigrew was always on the lookout for those more powerful than him – especially those who could offer him some form of protection. At school that was fellow Gryffindors James, Sirius and Remus – who he tagged along with until the latter eventually asking him to join their gang out of the kindness of his heart. He stayed loyal to them throughout school, with his name even featuring as one of the creators of the Marauder’s Map. After school? Well, let’s just say he took a different path to his school friends.

After a long bleak winter, the time has come to embrace the spring-time, let in some sunlight and – argh! – so much dust! The biggest cobwebs ever seen to mankind! And the much-maligned return of our greatest enemy... no, not Lord Voldemort, but that annoying patch of mildew in the bathroom! That’s right: Lord Mouldy-mort. (Wait, did [Peeves](https://harrypotter.fandom.com/wiki/Peeves) write this?)  

How did this all happen? It’s almost as if we’ve been huddled in a blanket for three months doing nothing whatsoever! Nonetheless, we’re going to be needing a magical home makeover immediately. We’re breaking into Ollivander’s, grabbing a wand, and trying these spells post-haste.  

## Scourgify  

The ultimate cleaning spell: this extremely useful charm eliminates grime, muck and dust with a simple wave of the wand. As you may imagine, Mrs Weasley absolutely swears by it. And think of the amount you’d save on bleach, bicarbonate of soda, lemon juice, and all the rest of it.

## Arania Exumai  

OK, no offence to our eight-legged friends... but there’s nothing worse than bumping into a scuttling spider while innocently sweeping away. With apologies, it just ruins the vibe. Brilliantly, there’s a niche spell for such a problem, which specifically banishes members of the arachnid family. In *Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets*, Harry uses the charm on a gathering of [Acromantula](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/creatures/acromantula)... thankfully, our household spiders are comparatively tame.  

## Accio  

You know that in-between moment during a spring-cleaning afternoon, where you make the fatal mistake of sitting down for half a second and then don’t want to do any cleaning ever again for the rest of your life? We reckon something like the [Summoning Charm](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/spells/the-summoning-charm) would help battle that inevitable moment of inertia. “Eurgh, just Accio extendable feather duster” you might say – which should give you the slight crumb of motivation you need to continue. 

## Capacius Extremis  

AKA the Undetectable Extension Charm. This is the spell that Newt Scamander uses to create a vibrant home for his magical creatures, all inside his modest briefcase. For you, this would be a nifty piece of magic to use for enlarging your cupboard space and shoving lots of clutter in there that you can’t be bothered dealing with right now.

## Lumos  

Go on...you know you have to. We are, of course, talking about that fateful moment where you must go behind that big chest of drawers...or under the couch, or an equivalent giant piece of furniture, that you’ve been putting off for longer than you may care to admit and... heaven forbid... clean behind it. 

But done, it must be, and at least with a spell like [Lumos](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/spells/the-wand-lighting-charm) you can be prepared for whatever horrors lie within those dark, mystery crevices.  

## Nox 

And of course, depending on what you might find... here’s the counter-spell to immediately stop dealing with it. 

## Wingardium Leviosa  

During a spring-cleaning session, there is always that point of no return... yes, the part where you’ve dumped every possession you’ve ever owned all over the floor, and now everything has to go back into its rightful place... wouldn’t it be much better if all of your clobber was gently floating around, so you could give the floor a cheeky mop, then gracefully pluck the items out of the air?

## Reducio  

Why, oh why did you keep all those giant cardboard boxes? What do you mean it felt important at the time? Fool! And flattening and ripping up those huge things is always so exhausting; they should make it into an Olympic sport. If only there was a way to make them super-duper small, so they could drop into the recycling bin, nary a second thought. Oh wait, there is! [Reducio!](https://www.harrypotter.com/features/what-is-the-most-underrated-spell-in-the-wizarding-world-the-debate)

The Reducing Charm would also be another great way to save on storage space. Just make all your belongings cute and dinky and file them away for a rainy day. Remember to cast Engorgio when you want to use them again, mind you, otherwise your hairdryer will only be useful for ants. 

## Tergeo 

This is a wiping charm, ideal for targeting stubborn grime. In the books, Hermione used this spell to clean up Harry’s bloodied nose after his unfortunate run-in with [Malfoy](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/characters-and-pets/draco-malfoy), but we imagine you are using Tergeo for far more boring, less painful reasons.  

## Orchideous  

Here's a nice idea for when you’ve finished: this friendly spell produces a cheerful bouquet of flowers at the tip of the caster’s wand, completely out of the ether. Wouldn’t that be a nice finishing flourish to your new, spick and span home?

## 1. The first-ever Hogwarts start-of-term feast

Harry’s mouth fell open. The dishes in front of him were now piled with food. He had never seen so many things he liked to eat on one table: roast beef, roast chicken, pork chops and lamb chops, sausages, bacon and steak, boiled potatoes, roast potatoes, chips, Yorkshire pudding, peas, carrots, gravy, ketchup and, for some strange reason, mint humbugs.

Bearing in mind [Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) grew up with the Dursleys’ scraps while his [cousin](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/dudley-dursley) got all the spoils, his first-ever [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) feast is a true joy to behold. For anyone not British, they were left wondering what on earth a Yorkshire pudding was. But the bountiful joy of the Hogwarts feast (especially for a skinny, neglected eleven-year-old) surely united us all across the world. And did you also notice the mint humbugs – clearly an addition from the Muggle-sweet-loving [Professor Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore)? A very nice touch.

Harry had never in all his life had such a Christmas dinner. A hundred fat, roast turkeys, mountains of roast and boiled potatoes, platters of fat chipolatas, tureens of buttered peas, silver boats of thick, rich gravy and cranberry sauce – and stacks of wizard crackers every few feet along the table.

And if a regular Hogwarts feast wasn’t good enough, we then got to see what a Christmas dinner at Hogwarts looked like. Spoiler: it was extremely yum. The description of the ‘tureens of buttered peas’ gets us every time. Never has a vegetable seemed so alluring – and the fact this was Harry’s first proper Christmas gave this scene emotional heft.

Professor Lupin had come back. He paused as he entered, looked around and said, with a small smile, ‘I haven’t poisoned that chocolate, you know ...’ Harry took a bite and to his great surprise felt warmth spread suddenly to the tips of his fingers and toes.

It doesn’t always need to be a plentiful feast when it comes to the small pleasures of eating well. During Harry’s unpleasant (to say the least) encounter with a [Dementor](/fact-file/creatures/dementor) aboard the [Hogwarts Express](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hogwarts-express), he was surprised to learn that a bit of chocolate could do so much more than just be delicious. After being left cold and weakened by the heinous creature, his new [Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/defence-against-the-dark-arts), [Professor Lupin](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/remus-lupin), knew what was best for him. Sometimes it’s the simple things that are the most powerful, if consumed in the right moment.

Ron came back five minutes later, carrying three foaming tankards of hot Butterbeer. ‘Happy Christmas!’ he said happily, raising his tankard. Harry drank deeply. It was the most delicious thing he’d ever tasted and seemed to heat every bit of him from the inside.

Ah, of course. The spectre of [Butterbeer](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/butterbeer) loomed large over Harry during *Prisoner of Azkaban*, on account of the fact he couldn’t go to [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) to have any. After hearing the accounts from [Ron](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) and [Hermione](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) on just how great it was, he eventually snuck into the wizarding village to try it for himself. We bet it tasted all the sweeter having to wait for it for so long.

Creamy chunks of nougat, shimmering pink squares of coconut ice, fat, honey-coloured toffees; hundreds of different kinds of chocolate in neat rows; there was a large barrel of Every Flavour Beans, and another of Fizzing Whizzbees, the levitating sherbet balls that Ron had mentioned; along yet another wall were ‘Special Effects’ sweets: Droobles Best Blowing Gum (which filled a room with bluebell-coloured bubbles that refused to pop for days), the strange, splintery Toothflossing Stringmints, tiny black Pepper Imps (‘breathe fire for your friends!’), Ice Mice (‘hear your teeth chatter and squeak!’), peppermint creams shaped like toads (‘hop realistically in the stomach!’), fragile sugar-spun quills and exploding bonbons.

Butterbeer wasn’t the only delicious thing waiting for Harry in Hogsmeade. The luscious confectionary of [Honeydukes](/fact-file/locations/honeydukes) also cast a spell on him – where we discovered even more weird and wonderful sweets not available from the [Trolley Witch’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/trolley-witch) selection. Just seeing the seemingly endless choices at Hogsmeade’s shops really opened up the wizarding world for us even more. And besides the magical options, even just the creamy chunks of nougat sound great.

Harry watched her out of sight, then crawled under his bed, wrenched up the loose floorboard, and pulled out a large chunk of birthday cake. He sat there on the floor eating it, savouring the happiness that was flooding through him. He had cake, and Dudley had nothing but grapefruit; it was a bright summer’s day, he would be leaving Privet Drive tomorrow, his scar felt perfectly normal again, and he was going to watch the Quidditch World Cup.

After Dudley was forced on a diet during another miserable summer at the Dursleys, Harry evaded the banality of grapefruit breakfasts thanks to a little help from his friends. Although birthday cake is delicious, whatever the context, it’s more about the secrecy of enjoying his birthday cake undercover that we love the most about this scene. A sly moment of hidden happiness after weeks of the opposite.

‘Chicken!’ he said hoarsely, after removing the old Daily Prophets from his mouth and throwing them down onto the cave floor. Harry pulled open his bag and handed over the bundle of chicken legs and bread. ‘Thanks,’ said Sirius, opening it, grabbing a drumstick, sitting down on the cave floor and tearing off a large chunk with his teeth.

Bit of a weird one, admittedly, but a moment that sticks in the mind all the same. After having been forced on the run at the end of *Prisoner of Azkaban*, Harry’s Godfather was a sorry state by the time they were able to reunite. Again, the simplicity of this meal is what was important – as poor [Sirius](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sirius-black) ravenously feasted on chicken and bread, snuck out of Hogwarts by Harry. You can feel his hunger emanating from the pages.

Three helpings of rhubarb crumble and custard later and the waistband on Harry’s jeans was feeling uncomfortably tight (which was saying something as the jeans had once been Dudley’s). As he laid down his spoon there was a lull in the general conversation: Mr Weasley was leaning back in his chair, looking replete and relaxed; Tonks was yawning widely, her nose now back to normal; and Ginny, who had lured Crookshanks out from under the dresser, was sitting cross-legged on the floor, rolling Butterbeer corks for him to chase. ‘Nearly time for bed, I think,’ said Mrs Weasley with a yawn.

And of course, we couldn’t talk about the bliss of a well-cooked dish without thinking of the Weasley matriarch, [Molly Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/molly-weasley). Dinnertime at [The Burrow](/fact-file/locations/the-burrow) was always a pleasure thanks to Molly’s enviable culinary skills. And there was just something so wholesome about breakfast sizzling on a pan, or a delicious stew being stirred whenever Harry came to visit.  

Molly upped the ante when certain events forced everybody to move into [Sirius’s decrepit family home](/fact-file/locations/number-twelve-grimmauld-place) – but she would not be deterred by the unwelcoming surroundings. Upon Harry’s first visit there with the [Order of the Phoenix](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/order-of-the-phoenix), tense discussions eventually gave way to Molly’s delicious cooking. [Lord Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) might have been on the ascent, but nothing was going to stop Molly from making her rhubarb crumble.

## Sometimes you need a bit of perspective 
Life can be challenging and sometimes it feels as though you can’t see the wood from the trees – especially when you are struggling or feel as though you’re failing. It’s hard to take a step back and see the whole picture. Yes, [Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) found it harder to be near [Dementors](/fact-file/creatures/dementor) than his peers. Yes, it led to some embarrassing and frustrating situations for him. But he was ignoring the context. Luckily, Lupin was there with a few choice and reassuring words to remind him.

## A bittersweet moment 
Ok, he might have had the odd wobble (like recklessly trying to join Harry on a dangerous [Horcrux](/fact-file/objects/horcrux) hunt with a newborn at home) but Lupin was selfless and noble – no matter the cost. We wish that he, [Tonks](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/nymphadora-tonks-fact-file) and Teddy could have had more time as a family, but these words, whilst tragic, bring some comfort and are rather inspiring. It’s quite the legacy to leave behind.

## It’s always nice when people see your strengths
Of course it’s common knowledge that [Hermione Granger](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) was a genius. The hundred and twelve percent she got in her first-year [Charms](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/charms) exam. The fact she brewed [Polyjuice Potion](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/polyjuice-potion) as a *second-year*. The way she figured out exactly how [Rita Skeeter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rita-skeeter) was getting all those horrible scoops – that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Yet, most people were rather disparaging of Hermione’s gift. She was dismissed as a ‘know-it-all’ all too frequently (jealousy is a horrid green-eyed monster). Then Lupin came along. Who doesn’t love love? Even [Argus Filch](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/argus-filch) (allegedly) hooked up with [Madam Pince](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/madam-irma-pince) in the end. Yes, even the most cynical of cynics can’t help but revel in matters of heart: the thrill of the chase, the ones that got away and, quite simply, the joy of hopelessly stanning. 

In the Harry Potter stories, we saw every romantic milestone: first kisses, weddings and will-they-won’t-theys. But what if things had been different? Could those characters have ended up with someone else? And who was the most compatible? 

We asked you to tell us your most unpopular opinions when it came to wizarding world couples, and you all had a *lot* to say. There were many so many fantastic suggestions that we thought they deserved their moment in the spotlight. Here are just a few…

## Harry and Cho should have stayed together
You would’ve thought these two sporty types would’ve been a perfect match: but unlike their positions on the Quidditch pitch, they were *seeking* out the wrong things.

So [Harry’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) first romance ended up being short-lived, full of miscommunication – with a touch of awkwardness. However, that doesn’t mean that Harry and [Cho’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/cho-chang) relationship was devoid of any sweet moments. In fact, some fans thought their relationship was so cute they should end game.

One such person was __gabbyisactive__ who stated: 

*‘Harry should’ve been with Cho Chang, not [Ginny].’*

They weren’t alone, *Darcelle* thought Cho and Harry were a better fit than who he eventually ended up with: 

*‘I actually shipped Harry and Cho Chang more! Harry and Ginny just came out of nowhere, even in the books. Ginny always had a crush on Harry in the books. But all sudden after Harry and Cho Chang broke up, in the 6th book, he wants to be with Ginny. It just came out of nowhere.’*

## Hermione and Draco had a spark
If there was one unpopular opinion that seemed... actually pretty popular amongst fans, it was the idea that that a certain [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) and [Slytherin](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/slytherin) belonged together. In fact, this is one pairing people were rather passionate about. 

As __alievaa.66__ clearly demonstrated with their response: '*HERMIONE AND DRACO SHOULD HAVE BEEN A COUPLE*👹👹👹'.

This was further back up by __Brittany__ who thought no love story is complete without a bit of angst:

*‘Unpopular opinion, Hermione and Draco! Mainly cause the actors had such chemistry. The book didn’t really have that, but it could have made a great love story! Lots of angst, which I love.’*

It’s true Emma Watson and Tom Felton are two rather charismatic people and that makes their chemistry rather special. However, we’re not sure that [Hermione](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) would ever have wanted to be with someone who saw her as inferior just because she was [Muggle-born](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggle-borns) and insulted her at every opportunity. Sorry to burst that bubble!
